About Under His Wing

Our Beginning:

Under His Wing began in the summer of 1999.During its inception we began our service only one Saturday a month. The need in providing this service was discovered by accident. In talking with different members of the church, inquiries were made as to where in the local community there was a place that the homeless of our community could go for information on housing, hot meals, clothing or any other resources they needed. With a few cooking items from home and food purchased by our team, it then became our mission and goal “to serve”. Our first meal was held in a near empty hall and we had 10 visitors that day. Our plan was, as it is now, to serve of a hot meal, to give a plate to go, and provide additional canned goods that can be taken with each of our visitors as he or she leaves. We served less than 400 visitors our first year.

Present: We are in the process of relocating our location as well as our services and the hours that we are open. This is due to several different factors that includes location, rent and volunteers available. We want you to know that we have and will continue our services as much as possible during this reorganization.

  • 2000 to 2001 -- 1280 plates served
  • 2001 to 2002 -- 2200 plates served
  • 2002 to 2003 -- 2900 plates served
  • 2003 to 2004 -- 3500 plates served
  • 2004 to 2005 -- 4700 plates served
  • 2005 to 2006 -- 5943 plates served
  •

In 2000 Under His Wing increased the services from once monthly to bi-weekly. This change came about because during additional interviews with our visitors and evaluating our own services we found several gaps within the services that were offered in the community of Lakewood itself. Under His Wing has continued to address these needs by incorporation the food pantry within its services along with a supplemental clothing distribution at each of the bi-weekly soup kitchen operations. In 2005 Under His Wing served 5858 plates of food and provided 1437 additional bags of daily staples to supplement our visitor's needs. The final count for 2005 is 5943 clients served

As in our inception Under His Wing is totally operated by volunteers, the volunteer base has continued to grow in direct proportion to the services offered. This growth has primarily been through word of mouth within the local churches, synagogues, community service groups, schools and our own visitors.if you or your business would like to become one of our volunteers or donors contact us with any questions you may have.
